The 28th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP28) is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 30th November – 12th December, 2023. Maybe the largest conference so far is expected to host over 70,000 delegates, including heads of state and world leaders, to discuss how the targets set in the Paris Agreement will be achieved in concrete terms. Finland also has its own pavilion at COP28 for the first time.
As severe climate impacts continue to accelerate this year, Operaatio Arktis will participate in COP28 together with many of our partners to create safer spaces for critical questions that we must start to ask ourselves:
CAN WE INTERVENE IN THE COLLAPSE?
With current climate strategies, many catastrophic consequences are unavoidable. Climate interventions, however, alongside ambitious emission reductions and carbon removal, have the potential to prevent some of these impacts.
It is time for a new paradigm, Climate Repair, that strives to repair the damage that’s already done or underway because of the already emitted greenhouse gasses and heat in the ocean. Climate Repair is about not surrendering to the catastrophes that the past and current actions have locked in. It is a complete mitigation strategy that seeks to synergize emission reductions and CDR with climate interventions to minimize loss and damage to peoples and societies.
Four members of our team are at COP28 to build capacities to scale up interdisciplinary research on climate interventions to obtain a chance of avoiding irreversible climate collapses.
